15 Scholarships to Help You Pay for Grad School

There’s no doubt that obtaining a college education can open a world of possibilities and new opportunities, but what about going on to graduate school and getting an advanced degree? On average, around 69.7% of high school graduates enroll in a higher education program. Of that amount, 37% continue to obtain an advanced degree (such as a Master’s or a Doctorate degree).

But is it worth it?

Having an advanced degree can make career goals more attainable and provide the skills needed to reach the next level. However, high tuition prices can make students wonder if continuing their education is worth the cost. The truth is that it isn’t always. Students should reflect on their career goals and what they hope to get from a graduate program to determine if it’s worth it or not.

Firstly,  you should be clear on exactly why you are considering a graduate degree. Does it help you get closer to your career goals? Will it help you earn more money? Take the time to reflect on your goals and what you need to reach them.

Another point to consider is how long you plan to work in your field. Do you see it as a long-term option? In that case, a graduate-level degree might be worth it. Do you hate it and hope to leave as soon as possible? If so, it’s likely not worth pursuing an advanced degree, at least not in that field.

A third factor is how your salary will likely change as a result of your graduate degree. This information should be available on the websites of the colleges you are considering and is also usually easy to find with a quick Google search. In general, graduate-level degrees in the STEM fields tend to pay off the most in the end.

Lastly, consider whether your career goals involve field-related research. Many graduate students choose to continue their education for the chance of doing research and working with renowned professionals in their field.

Once you’ve decided to continue your education, you’ll need to decide how to pay for it. The price tag can be scary, but scholarships for graduate students can help.

25 Helpful Scholarships for Transfer Students

Going off to college can be an exciting and life-changing experience, but choosing the right school can be overwhelming! With such a complicated and large decision to make, it’s no surprise that many students later transfer to another school.

In fact, for one reason or another, over one-third of college students end up changing schools at some point during their academic career. Some go off in search of better academics or a more active student atmosphere while others want a cheaper school or one a bit closer to home. Another common reason for transferring schools is that some students attend an affordable community college for two years before transferring to a four-year college or university to complete their degree. For more information about this money-saving option, take a look at this article

Regardless of the reason, the process of transferring schools is relatively easy and painless. The process of paying for school, however, is still a major concern for many students.

How Paying for School Differs

Usually, when applying for college, incoming freshmen are automatically considered for financial aid and merit-based scholarships when submitting their admissions application. Unfortunately, many universities don’t extend that same luxury to transfer students, meaning students entering with college credits are forced to search elsewhere for financial aid.

The process of paying for school can be overwhelming for anyone, but, luckily, the process of finding scholarships for transfer students isn’t impossible.

16 Essay-Free Scholarships to Apply for in 2018

Scholarships are a fantastic way to save money on your college tuition and to avoid being stuck with loads of student debt after graduation. But, let’s face it, the process of applying for scholarships can be time-consuming (unless you’re using Going Merry!) and, sometimes, it would be nice if it was just a little easier.

The good news is that easy scholarships and scholarships without essays do exist. Some require as little effort as simply entering your name and email address while others require only a short video rather than an essay.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that, while these offers for easy scholarships and no essay scholarships are legitimate, your chances are much lower than with traditional scholarships. You also run the risk of being spammed with loads of emails. In fact, many scholarship sweepstakes are created with the sole idea of getting your email address in mind.

We recommend using scholarship sweepstakes and easy scholarships as a secondary option for paying for college and using the majority of your time applying for scholarships that you find on Going Merry or ones recommended to you by your high school guidance counselor or financial aid advisor.

Avoiding Scholarship Scams

While these scholarship offers are legitimate, scammers will sometimes offer too-easy-to-be-true scholarship opportunities in an effort to get money or your information. You should proceed with caution and follow the tips below to avoid getting scammed.

Scam Tip #1: Say “No!” to Upfront Fees!

A scholarship shouldn’t cost anything at all to apply for (except postage). Be wary of any company or scholarship provider who requires you to pay an upfront fee in order to apply. Chances are they have nothing to offer you!

Scam Tip #2: Do The Paperwork Yourself

Some scammers will try and lure you in by telling you that they’ll take care of all the scholarship paperwork for you. You can just sit back, relax, and wait for the money to start rolling in. It almost seems too good to be true, doesn’t it? We hate to break it to you, but that’s because it is. It might be painful, but filling out your own applications will save you loads of trouble!

Scam Tip #3: Guaranteed Scholarships Don’t Exist

If scholarships were guaranteed, student loans would be a thing of the past. Avoid any company claiming to offer you a guaranteed scholarship. It’s a guaranteed scam.

Scam Tip #4: Avoid Dodgy Offers

If you receive an email from an unknown and unprofessional-looking company claiming to offer an amazing scholarship if you enter personal information on their site, it’s best to avoid it. If you’re unsure, simply do a quick Google Search and see if others have reported it as a scam before.

Scam Tip #5: Do Your Research!

Doing a quick search can save you tons of trouble in the end. Unfortunately, easy scholarships are too good to be true a lot of the time. We just want to reiterate that using trusted sources, like Going Merry or your counselors/advisors, is always the best option when it comes to scholarships.
